What does the term carbon fiber frame mean?

The first thing a carbon fiber frame means is that you’ll be paying a lot for that bike. Carbon fiber is among the lightest weight materials that are also strong enough to comprise a bike frame. You may have seen CF auto parts, well before it made the transition to automobiles; it was utilized as an ultra-lightweight option for competition level racing bicycles. Today you can get one for recreational use, if you are willing to pay the price.

Fork travel is the amount of give that a specific front wheel fork has built into it. For instance, if you have a fork with 4” of travel, you need to ensure that you get a wheel that is at least 4” less in radius than the fork length, or you could be tearing up tread on the inside of the fork when you hit bumps in the trail. Fork travel is only used for front shock absorbers; the rear suspension uses other methods of measurement.

I’m a first time bike buyer, what is the most important consideration for buying a new bike?

The most important consideration is what use you have in mind for the bicycle. If you live in the middle of Manhattan and the closest thing you have to wilderness is central park, then you probably won’t need a mountain bike. However, if you’re into extreme urban cycling, that may be exactly what you are looking for. In simple terms, understand what you want to use the bike for, so that you know whether you should be getting a road bike, a racing bike, a BMX bike, or a mountain bike.
